Hi everyone,
How are you today?
I've come to Emmanuel College (seen in the picture at the top of this
article) at Cambridge University to start a 2-week summer school on
early-modern Japanese palaeography. This is my third time taking the
course. The first time was in 2021 and was online because we were still in
the middle of the Covid pandemic. The second time was in 2022 and that time
it was in person. I wrote about it on this blog..

Due to my fieldwork in Japan, I missed last year's course, so I'm feeling a
bit nervous this year because I haven't practiced reading early-modern
cursive script for a long time. The course is also intensive, so I'm going
to need lots of energy. So, the day before the course started, I met up
with another of the participants who had come from Japan to get some
encouragement and make sure I took some time to relax. First, she and I had
lunch at a pub near the river...
We then took a little walk and had a lot to catch up on so we chatted and
chatted as we strolled past some of the sights...
Finally, we met another of the course participants and had a cream tea
together. (A cream tea consists of a scone, jam, and clotted cream with a
cup of tea)...
It was a very British afternoon for me (and I needed some natto in the
evening to help balance what I'd eaten!) but it was good to be able to
relax before the intensive studying starts this week. Wish me luck!
I hope you've also had a good start to the week. I will try to write again
during the summer school, but if I'm not able to, I will write as soon as
the course is over. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Best wishes, from Corrina.☺️
